Risk Assessment

Health and Safety is an area of increasing scrutiny by the authorities!

If you run a big business or operate as a one-man band the law states you must carry out systematic health and safety, and fire risk assessments. There is evidence that the Health and Safety Executive are becoming more active in checking that employers are meeting their legal obligations. Failure to have one, may lead to fines or imprisonment. The expectation is that insurers will be asking for evidence that a risk assessment is in place in order to defend against claims.

The Risk Assessment is the declaration of the employer's intent to provide and maintain, so far as is reasonably practicable, a safe and healthy working environment and to enlist the support of employees towards achieving these ends. The employer should sign the statement, to demonstrate commitment to managing health and safety.

A Risk Assessment under this definition requires that you identify what in your workplace could cause harm to you, your employees or members of the public/customers.

The Assessment consists of 5 parts, which are:

  1. Identifying significant hazards.
  2. Deciding who might be at risk and how.
  3. Evaluating the risk and whether sufficient precautions are in place. Prioritising action.
  4. Recording the findings in writing if you have more than 5 employees. (However we recommend those with smaller numbers keep written evidence).
  5. Reviewing your assessments regularly.

Staff need to be involved with the process and once completed sign to confirm they have been made aware of the dangers etc.

While you can do your own risk assessment it may not meet the requirements of the HSE, The Act itself talks of a competent person carrying out the assessment.

Melrose will carry out a Risk Assessment on your behalf.

Our consultant will visit your premises, large or small, to carry out an audit of your existing practices and procedures, and produce a full report detailing the risks apparent on the day on which the audit was carried out.

Risk Assessments should be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in the workplace.
